How To Lose Belly Fat

Sue is a client who grew up running. She was an athlete in high school and she admits her biggest motive for running was so she could “eat anything she wanted and not gain weight”. Fast forward to her mid-40’s and a visit to her doctor, who gave her the news about her elevated blood sugar and pre-diabetic status.

Sue was shocked and in disbelief.  She had noticed her mid-section was growing, but she had figured she just needed to run harder and longer in order to lose weight. Unfortunately, long runs and hard workouts did not help. She was just feeling more and more fatigue.

The typical American diet is very high in sugar and processed foods. Most of us feel like we eat a “pretty healthy diet”. But what does this mean? It’s a perception we all have that we’re doing our best to eat as healthy as we know how.

If you’re concerned about belly fat and weight loss resistance, you may already know “spot reducing” and dieting do not work. Your hormonal health could be a root cause of these imbalances. All our hormones are connected to each other and affect one another, beginning with insulin. A high insulin level is a contributing factor to insulin resistance.

Balancing your hormones is key and it begins by upgrading your carbs. How do you do that? Get familiar with all the foods in your diet that turn to sugar. These are refined carbs with no fiber; foods like flours, white rice, cookies, muffins and all other flour-containing foods that serve only to fill you up and not to nourish you.

Instead, pick root vegetables, green, yellow, red and purple vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts and seeds. These are metabolized by the body slowly and they will contribute nutrients to your microbiome because they contain soluble and insoluble fiber, which not only delays the conversion of starch to sugar, but the fiber also serves to feed the good bacteria in the gut.
